SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA WASTEWATER
METHANE CAPTURE PROJECT
SECTOR:
METHANE RECOVERY AND
AVOIDANCE
General Description:
The project activity involves the
installation of a covering system on the existing
anaerobic lagoons of
the four wastewater treatment plants in Santa Cruz de la
Sierra,
Bolivia. This system will allow the lagoons to operate as anaerobic
digesters
and to capture the methane generated by anaerobic
decomposition of the organic
matter content, following by the combustion
of the biogas in a closed flare.
Project lifetime:
20 years
Accreditation period:
21 years
Baseline and Monitoring Methodology:
Approved Baseline and Monitoring
Methodology applied to the small-scale project activity.
Version 04 of
AMS II.H: Methane recovery in wastewater treatment, 23 December 2006.
Estimated Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Reductions:
Up to a period of 21 years: 879,979 tCO2-
equivalent.
Annual average estimated emissions
reductions: 41,904 tCO2e.
Main Project Benefits:
The development of this project under the
CDM framework implies for the city a commitment to improve the current
sewerage network management and sustain it during the lifetime of the
project.
Enhanced wastewater management will bring
an improvement in the environmental and sanitary conditions in the
surrounded residential areas.
The gained experience could be
replicable in another places in Bolivia.
Current Status:
The PDD is under revision by the DNA to
issue the National Letter of Approval
